When the mortar joints are crumbling or otherwise damaged, but the overall structure of the chimney is sound, we will typically repoint the mortar joints in question. Repointing is the process of filling the joints with new cement. We begin by using an angle grinder to grind out the old joints, and then fill them in with fresh mortar. Repointing is terrific at adding decades onto the structural life of the chimney, giving a newer appearance to the masonry, and closing any gaps and cracks where water or pests may find an entry point.
